## Teaching the Letter F

### The sound it makes

A long "fff" you can hold, made with the top teeth on the bottom lip. Easy to feel, which makes it a good early sound.

### How the letter is formed

Start below the top, curve up and left, then straight down to the baseline, then lift and cross the middle.

### Words that start with F

Ask them to hold the sound for as long as their breath lasts while they colour it in. Sounds that can be stretched are the ones children blend into words first.

Colouring a letter is not handwriting practice, and it is not meant to be. What it does is buy time: a child spends ten quiet minutes with the shape of Ff in front of them and comes away recognising it, which is the step that has to happen before a pencil is any use.
