## Teaching the Letter X

### The sound it makes

Almost never at the start of a word. In the middle or at the end it says "ks", as in box and fox, which is where children actually meet it.

### How the letter is formed

One diagonal down to the right, lift, one diagonal down to the left. Two strokes that cross.

### Words that start with X

xylophone box fox six mix

Teach it with box and fox rather than xylophone. Four wedges to colour where the strokes cross, and alternating colours makes the crossing point obvious.

Colouring a letter is not handwriting practice, and it is not meant to be. What it does is buy time: a child spends ten quiet minutes with the shape of Xx in front of them and comes away recognising it, which is the step that has to happen before a pencil is any use.
