## How to Draw Bubble Letters by Hand

Worth learning even with a generator open, because it is the only way to letter straight onto something you cannot feed through a printer.

   ### Write the word lightly in pencil

   Ordinary handwriting, spaced wider than usual. This is the skeleton, not the finished letter, so keep the line faint enough to erase.
2. 2
   ### Draw a rounded outline around each stroke

   Follow the pencil line at an even distance on both sides, as if the stroke had been inflated. Keep that distance the same for every letter and the word will look consistent.

   ### Round off every corner

   This is the step people skip. Bubble letters have no sharp points: the top of an A, the corners of an E and the tail of a Q all become curves.

   ### Close the gaps where strokes meet

   Where two strokes join, rub out the outline running through the junction so the letter reads as one continuous shape rather than overlapping tubes.

   ### Erase the skeleton and ink the outline

   Remove the pencil, go over the outline in pen, and leave the middles empty until you decide how to fill them.

## Real Outlines, Not a Font With a Border

Most tools that claim to make bubble letters take an ordinary typeface and add a stroke around the outside. The letter underneath stays solid, so what you get is a fat shape wearing a thin frame, with no usable space in the middle of it. Here the glyph carries no fill whatsoever. What prints is the edge of the letterform itself and nothing else, which is the difference between lettering you can work into and lettering you can only look at.

Scale is handled for you, and it is measured against the paper rather than against a template. A single initial grows until it very nearly meets the margins. A longer word gets divided across extra lines and then pushed back up in size, instead of being left to shrink into something too small to be worth printing. Point sizes never come into it.

### Choosing an Outline Weight

The weight matters more than the letterform for most jobs. **Thin** is for tracing: it gives you a line to follow and almost nothing to erase afterwards, which is what you want when the lettering is going into a journal or onto card. **Medium** is the general-purpose weight and prints cleanly at any size. **Thick** holds up when the sheet is on a wall and being read from across a room, and it is also the easiest to colour inside without the outline disappearing under the marker.

### Across or Stacked

**Across** sets the text horizontally and gives you the largest possible letters, wrapping onto a second or third line only when keeping one line would make everything too small. It is the right choice for posters, headers and anything that will be read as a word. **Stacked** runs the text vertically, one character per line, which is smaller by necessity but is exactly the proportion you need for a door sign, a banner hung in a doorway, or lettering down the spine of something.

### Filling Them In So They Look Three-Dimensional

Flat colour is fine, but two small habits make printed bubble letters look drawn rather than filled. First, leave a small unpainted gap near the top left of each letter, as though a light source were sitting up there; the eye reads the shape as rounded immediately. Second, add a second outline in a darker shade a couple of millimetres below and to the right of the first, following the same contour. That single offset line is what gives graffiti lettering its weight, and it takes about a minute per word.
