The Story
Your daughter is a princess in a castle with tall towers and warm fires. Every night the wind sings outside her window, but her mother the Queen hears only the night. One morning the princess follows the sound past the courtyard and the garden wall, into a forest so tall the trees seem to hold up the sky. The Queen watches her go, and leaves the gate open.
In the forest the wind speaks to her. Nobody has heard it in a very long time. It has no name, which sounds lonely to her, so she asks it to show her what it sees. An owl that turns its head all the way round. Three owlets asleep under its wing. A fox kit brave enough to sniff her shoe if she stays still enough. A hundred fireflies, and a deer at a moonlit stream. When the wind carries her home, the Queen is waiting at the open gate. "The wind is real, Mama." "I believe you."
What the Wind Shows Her
No dragon to slay and no prince to wait for. The adventure is being still enough to see.
-
The wind spirit
A voice soft as breath, that no one has heard in a very long time.
-
The owl
Small and round, with eyes like amber marbles, keeping three owlets warm.
-
The fox kit
Orange as autumn. It only comes close because she sits so quietly.
-
The fireflies
One, then two, then a hundred, lighting the way as the forest grows dark.
-
The deer
Still as moonlight at the edge of the stream.
-
The open gate
A mother who lets her go, waits for her, and believes her.
Questions About The Princess Who Listened to the Wind
Is this a typical princess story?
Not really. There is no rescue, no prince and no ball. The princess walks into the forest on her own, listens to something nobody else can hear, and gets close to the animals by being patient and quiet. Her mother trusts her to go and believes her when she comes back.
Who is in The Princess Who Listened to the Wind?
Two characters from your photos: your daughter as the princess and her mom as the Queen. The forest animals and the wind spirit are illustrated to go with them.
What age is it for?
Ages 2 to 8. The forest grows dark near the end, but the fireflies arrive straight away, and the story is gentle from start to finish. It takes about five minutes to read aloud.

You upload a photo of each character and type in their name. The story is already written, so your child's name goes into the text and every illustration is drawn from your photos, keeping them recognizable from the first page to the last.
