Six Handwriting Worksheets to Make This Week
The same tool, pointed at whatever your class or your child is working on right now.
Spelling lists
Paste this week's words, one per line, and the sheet becomes handwriting practice and spelling revision at the same time.
Alphabet practice
A–Z, a–z or Aa–Zz letter pairs in a click. Pairs are the fastest way to teach which capital goes with which lowercase.
Sight words
The high-frequency words that have to be recognised rather than sounded out. Repetition on paper is what makes them automatic.
Number formation
Numbers 0–9 with the same guide lines, because reversed 3s and 5s are a handwriting problem before they are a maths one.
Sentence copying
Several lines each get their own row, so a whole sentence fits on the page with spacing and capital letters intact.
Letter reversals
Type just b d p q and the line repeats down the page, so the letters a child keeps flipping get drilled on their own instead of buried in the alphabet.
Letters That Let Go Gradually
Handwriting practice worksheets work best when the support fades. Set the difficulty to Trace & fade and a single page walks through the whole sequence, so the child finishes writing unaided without ever noticing the moment the help disappeared.
- Solid grey: the first row, traced straight over the top.
- Dotted: the shape is still there, the hand does more of the work.
- Hollow outline: only the edges remain to steer by.
- Blank guide lines: writing from memory, which is the actual goal.
Every row also starts with a green dot. It is a small thing, but starting each letter at the top left is the habit that makes joined-up writing possible later, and children who start wherever they like are the ones who have to unlearn it.
Grey, dotted, outline, blank: the same word, four levels of support.
Custom Handwriting Practice Worksheets, Generated in the Browser
Most handwriting practice worksheets are downloads: a fixed PDF built around somebody else’s word list. They are fine until the week your class is working on ough words, or a child needs a hundred more goes at the letter b, or the spelling list changes on Monday. Then the pack is the wrong pack.
This handwriting worksheet generator builds the page from whatever you type, in the browser, with nothing to download and nothing to install. Type one line and it repeats down the page for drilling. Type several and each gets its own row, which turns the sheet into sentence copying. Load the alphabet, letter pairs or numbers from the quick-fill buttons and then edit them by hand if you want a different order.
Everything sits on the four-line guide taught in most classrooms, positioned against the font’s real metrics rather than floated near it, so tall letters reach the top line and descenders actually drop below the baseline. The sheet prints on A4 and US Letter without anything cut off, and you can name the worksheet whatever you like. “Spelling, Week 6” reads better on a class set than “Handwriting Practice”.
Practising One Name in Particular?
Writing your own name is the first piece of handwriting most children care about, and it deserves its own sheet. Our free name tracing worksheets generator titles the page for them, handles capital-first spelling, and steps from big preschool letters down to small ones.
And when the name is worth more than a worksheet, we make personalized children’s books where your child is the illustrated hero, drawn from their own photo, with their name printed all the way through the story. If you are after something to print rather than something to keep, you can also turn a photo into a coloring page for free.
Handwriting Worksheet Questions
Is the handwriting worksheet generator free?
Yes, completely. Type your text, print as many handwriting practice worksheets as you need, no account and no email. We make personalized storybooks for children, and this generator is free for the parents and teachers who find us.
What can I put on the worksheet?
Anything you can type: the alphabet, numbers, this week's spelling list, sight words, a sentence, a poem line, or a child's own name. One line repeats across every row for drilling a single word; several lines each get their own row, which is how you build a sentence-copying sheet.
Can I make alphabet handwriting worksheets?
Yes. The quick-fill buttons load A–Z capitals, a–z lowercase, Aa–Zz letter pairs, numbers 0–9 or vowels in one click, and you can edit the lines afterwards. Letter pairs are the useful one for teaching case matching, because the child sees the capital and lowercase form side by side.
How is this different from downloading a handwriting worksheet PDF?
A downloaded pack is fixed. This generator rebuilds the sheet the moment you type, so the worksheet matches the words your class is actually working on this week, not the words someone else chose. It is a custom handwriting worksheet each time, and it costs nothing to make another.
What are the four lines on the page?
They are the standard school handwriting guide. Small letters like a, c and e sit between the dashed middle line and the solid baseline. Tall letters like l, h and b reach the top line. Descenders on g, y and p drop below the baseline to the lower dashed line. You can also switch to a single baseline or no lines at all.
Can I use these worksheets in my classroom?
Yes. Teachers, tutors, childminders and homeschooling parents are welcome to print handwriting practice worksheets for every child in their care, free of charge. Please just link back to this page rather than re-hosting the sheets elsewhere.
Can I save the sheet as a PDF?
Yes. Click Print, then pick "Save as PDF" as the destination in your browser's print dialog. The layout is sized for both A4 and US Letter, so it prints correctly on either without anything being cut off.
Which font do the traceable letters use?
Andika, designed by SIL International specifically for early literacy. It uses a single-storey a and g and an unambiguous lowercase l, so children learn the letterforms they are actually taught to write rather than the ones a display font happens to use.
