Six Things That Help More Than Extra Practice
Learning to write your own name is a big milestone. These are the habits that get children there happily.
Capitals first, then lowercase
Uppercase letters are straight lines and simple curves. Master those, then move to the capital-first spelling used at school.
Five minutes is plenty
Short, cheerful sessions beat long ones. Stop while they are still enjoying it and they will come back tomorrow.
Start at the green dot
Every line begins with a green dot so your child learns to start each letter at the top left, the habit that makes writing flow later.
Say the letter out loud
Naming each letter while tracing links the shape to its sound, which is what turns name writing into early reading.
Fat crayons beat thin pencils
Chunky crayons and triangular pencils suit a developing grip. Handwriting comes from the whole hand before the fingertips.
Praise the effort, not the neatness
Wobbly letters are exactly right at this age. Confidence is what keeps them practising until the wobbles disappear.

Preschool name tracing starts with capitals only. They are built from straight lines and simple curves, which is all a developing grip can manage. Big letters and five wide rows mean less precision and more success.
Kindergarten

Kindergarten name writing practice switches to the capital-first spelling they will use at school, on the full four-line guide. This is where tails and tall letters start landing in the right place instead of floating.
Year 1 and beyond

Once tracing is easy, drop the letters entirely. Blank guide lines turn the sheet into name writing practice from memory, which is the point at which it stops being tracing and becomes handwriting.
An Editable Name Tracing Generator, Printable for Any Name
Most printable name tracing worksheets come as a fixed pack of common names, which is no help at all if your child is called Zayn, Ottilie or Maëlys. What age should a child start tracing their name?
Most children are ready to trace letters between ages 3 and 4, once they can hold a crayon with a reasonably steady grip. Start with the "Big" letter size and uppercase, then move to capital-first spelling around age 4–5, and to smaller letters once tracing feels easy.
What font do you use for the dotted letters?
Andika, a typeface SIL International designed for early literacy. It has a single-storey a and g, an unmistakable lowercase l, and letterforms that match how children are actually taught to write. Most dotted name tracing fonts are decorative; this one is built for learners, and the dotted, outline and grey ghost styles are all generated from it.
Should I start with capital letters or lowercase?
Start with all capitals. Capitals are built from straight lines and simple curves, so they are far easier for small hands than lowercase letters with their loops and tails. Once your child recognises their name in capitals, switch to the capital-first spelling they will use at school.
What are the dotted lines on the worksheet for?
The four-line guide is the same one used in most schools. Small letters like a, c and e sit between the dashed middle line and the solid baseline. Tall letters like l, h and b reach up to the top line. Letters with tails like g, y and p drop below the baseline to the lower dashed line.
Can I save the worksheet as a PDF?
