The Reading Log Problem

Almost every reading log fails the same way. It starts in week one with neat handwriting and a full set of columns, thins out by week three, and is abandoned by the end of the month with four entries on it. The reason is nearly always that it asked for too much. A log with columns for the date, the title, the author, the pages read, the minutes, a comment and a signature is a form, and nobody fills in a form about a bedtime story seven nights a week.

So the useful thing here is not the printing, it is the switches. Turn off the minutes if you are never going to time it. Turn off the grown-up column unless school insists. What is left is a date, a title and five stars to colour in, which takes about eight seconds and therefore actually happens.

What a Reading Log Is Actually For

Not accountability. The point is that a child sees a growing list of books with their name at the top of it and understands themselves as someone who reads. That is the whole mechanism, and it is why the star rating earns its place while the minutes column usually does not: rating a book is an opinion, and having an opinion about a book is closer to being a reader than counting how long you spent on it.

It is also why the name matters. Try both and watch: a sheet headed “My Reading Log” gets filled in for a fortnight, and one headed with their own name lasts noticeably longer.

For School Reading Records

If this is going in a book bag, switch on the grown-up initials column: that is what most schools mean by a signature, and initialling twelve rows is quicker than signing them. Schools that ask for pages rather than minutes are easily handled by writing the page number in the minutes box. Nobody has ever objected.

A reading log works because a child recognises themselves in it.
