Don’t Start at A
It is the obvious thing to do and it is the wrong order. Nearly every phonics scheme used in schools starts with the same six letters — s, a, t, p, i, n — for one reason: those six make more real words between them than any other six in the alphabet. A child who knows them can read and build sat, pin, tap, nip, pat and sit. A child who has done A, B, C and D in order knows four letters and can build nothing at all.
So start with the letters in your child’s own name, which are the ones they care about, and then work through these six. The rest of the alphabet can follow in any order you like.

Printable Alphabet Coloring Pages, One Letter at a Time
An alphabet colouring sheet does one job well: it puts a child in front of the shape of a letter for ten or fifteen quiet minutes. That is longer than any flashcard holds their attention, and letter recognition — knowing that this shape is b and that one is d — has to come before a pencil is any use at all. Colouring is not handwriting practice and does not pretend to be. It is the step before it.
Each of the twenty-six pages here has the letter in capital and lowercase, a picture word underneath, and a short set of notes for the adult: the sound the letter makes, how the lowercase form is written stroke by stroke, and which other letter it tends to get muddled with. Those notes are the reason each letter gets its own page rather than all of them living in one PDF.
Capitals or Lowercase First?
Capitals are easier to write — mostly straight lines, no curves below the baseline — which is why children reach for them first and why so much of what a four-year-old writes is in block capitals. But almost everything they will ever read is lowercase. The compromise most teachers use, and the default here, is to show both together on the same sheet so the pair is learned as one thing. Once a child reliably says “that’s a B” to both forms, switch to lowercase only.
About Letters Written Backwards
Reversed letters worry parents far more than they should. Writing b for d, or a backwards s or z, is ordinary up to about six and is not on its own a sign of anything. The pairs that cause it are predictable — b/d, p/q, m/w, n/h — and each of those letter pages names its own mix-up, with the distinguishing feature that actually helps: which stroke comes first. Colouring the two confusable letters in two different colours the child chooses does more than correcting them in the moment.

The Letters That Matter Most
The ones in their own name. A child who cannot pick out a single letter on a page will reliably spot the first letter of their name from across a room, because it belongs to them. That is the whole idea behind what we actually make: personalized children’s books where your child is the hero, illustrated from their photo, with their name printed through the entire story. Are these alphabet coloring pages free to print?

How is this different from a pack of alphabet printables?
The letters are drawn in your browser rather than shipped as fixed images, so you choose before you print: capital and lowercase together or one at a time, three letter styles, three outline thicknesses, and whether the picture word and the doodles appear at all. A downloaded pack gives you one version of each letter and that is that.
Which letter style should I pick?
Bubble for colouring, School for learning to write. Bubble letters are fat and round with big areas inside, which is what a three or four-year-old wants. The School style uses Andika, a typeface designed for early literacy, with the single-storey a and g that children are actually taught to write. Pick that one if the sheet is doing double duty as letter recognition.
What order should we do the letters in?
Not A to Z. Most phonics schemes start with s, a, t, p, i and n, because those six letters make more short words than any other six (sat, pin, tap, nip). Doing the alphabet in order means a child waits until the very end to meet some of the most useful letters. Start with the letters in their own name, then the s-a-t-p-i-n group.
Do they print on A4 and US Letter?
Both. The sheet is drawn as a tall portrait area that scales into whatever the printer gives it, so nothing is cropped on either paper size. Choose "Fit to page" if your print dialog offers it.
Can I save them as a PDF?
Yes. Press Print, then choose "Save as PDF" as the destination in your browser print dialog instead of a printer. That is the easiest way to build a full A–Z file to print later or take to a copy shop.
Do my settings carry over between letters?
Yes. Pick thick outlines and bubble letters on the A page and every other letter will match, so a full alphabet set comes out consistent instead of you re-choosing twenty-six times.
Can I use these in a classroom?
Yes. Teachers, childminders, homeschool parents and nursery staff are welcome to print as many copies as they need. The only thing we ask is that you link back to this page rather than re-hosting the files or selling them.
My child writes some letters backwards. Is that a problem?
Almost never before six. Reversals of b, d, p, q, s and z are a normal stage, not a warning sign, and they resolve on their own for the large majority of children. Each letter page here names the specific mix-up that letter is involved in, which is more useful than correcting in the moment.
