The sound it makes
A hum you can hold with your lips closed: "mmm" as in moon. Usually one of the first sounds a child can produce on request.
How the letter is formed
Straight down, back up, over and down, back up, over and down. Two humps, one continuous movement.
What it gets confused with
M and w are the same shape one way up and the other. Some children flip between them for months.
Words that start with M
Three legs and two arches. Ask them to count the legs out loud as they colour each one: it fixes the difference from "n" better than any amount of correcting.
Colouring a letter is not handwriting practice, and it is not meant to be.
