Teaching the Letter G
The sound it makes
Hard "g" as in goat and green. Soft "g" as in giraffe sounds like "j" and comes much later.
How the letter is formed
Round anticlockwise like a "c", close it, straight down below the line, then hook to the left.
What it gets confused with
Printed "g" often has a closed loop below the line that nobody writes by hand. The School style uses the single-storey handwritten form.
Words that start with G
The tail of the lowercase g drops below the baseline. Point that out while colouring: descenders are a thing children need to notice before their handwriting sits on the line.
Colouring a letter is not handwriting practice, and it is not meant to be.
